Eco372 - Kudler Fine Foods is an upscale food store located in the San Diego metropolitan area. It was founded in 1998 by Kathy Kudler who was a former Vice President of Marketing for a large defense contractor.
Eco 372 - Kudler Fine Foods sell a variety of bakery products, meats, condiments, cheeses, and other specialty products. In 2000, Kudler began expanding the stores and they now have three locations located throughout the Sand Diego metropolitan area. The three locations are in La Jolla which was opened in 1998, Del Mar which was opened in 2000, and Encinitas which was opened in 2003. All three locations will require an upgraded network.
Current Network Design
Ntc362 - Kudler Fine Foods have decided to have a Wide Area Network or WAN designed for all three locations and add Voice-Over Internet Protocol or VOIP services. The current network, shown in Figure 1, is a simple network that consists of only 56k modems for accessing any networks outside of the store’s location. 56k modems are outdated and only support speeds of 56Kbps which are not sufficient when trying to communicate with another store because the connection is not always on like in cable or DSL connections. All three stores currently have the same network setup which consists of a 10.1.50.0 Ethernet Network with a Novel 4.11 Server for POS. Each store has multiple computers connected to it running Windows 9X operating system.
Figure 1 – KFF Existing Network
Ntc 362 - The individual store locations are set up with a 10baseT Ethernet network in a bus topology. The current network setup that is employed by KFF is vulnerable in many ways, and has the potential to be overloaded as more client computers are added. With only one 56k Internet connection, it will be difficult to expand and add more registers, as only one transaction can be completed at a time.
